Can't figure out why getting rid of acne seems to be such a chore? Well, the secret lies in plain sight: the ingredient labels on ineffective acne products.
You buy a new "surely-this-one-will-work" acne product. Maybe it's a face wash this time, a toner, a gel, or one of these medicated face pads.
Then, you do your best to use it religiously. Your skin product collection is probably anywhere from impressive to borderline scary, and yet the outcome is always the same, isn't it?
Best case scenario - your skin kinda clears up for a little bit. But maybe it also gets drier and more sensitive, and - wait - is that more acne than you started with?
If it sounds familiar, that's because I've been through the very same routine more times than I'd like to admit to.
But I'm here to tell you it's not actually your fault. It's just that the system's designed to fail.
Have you tried it all? Me too. From my very first spots making a grand entrance at 14 to my late twenties, I've tried:
Over-the-counter products - think Paula's Choice, Clean & Clear, Neutrogena, Proactiv, and Murad; the list is long, and if you're thinking of it, I've probably tried it.
All these Pinterest-approved natural remedies, ranging from tea tree oil to literally putting food on my face and hoping for the best (oatmeal masks, anyone?).
Military-grade makeup to mask my pimples, which successfully clogged my pores even more.
Everything that my dermatologist thought would help, from prescription creams to peels.
Strict diets that were supposed to clear up my acne but instead gave me an almost supernatural ability to immediately locate chocolate within a 5-mile ratio.
You can probably guess where I'm going with this… Yup. None of these worked for me.
Not long-term, anyway. Some products looked very promising, but I'd end up covered in flakes. Others just made my acne come back with a renewed force and made me regret doing anything in the first place.
To tell you the truth, I was miserable.
But I'm not writing this to cry about my skin (not gonna lie, I've been there a few times, but those days are behind me).
I'm writing to tell you exactly how to get rid of your stubborn acne.
First, let's see why exactly all these products you've tried didn't give you the desired results.
Spending years trying to figure out why your acne won't quit, at the very least, makes you quite the researcher.
So many products claim to be the one… so how come nothing I try works?
You'd think getting rid of something that's not really supposed to be on your skin anyway shouldn't take years and years, but at one point, I truly thought I was more likely to become a rocket scientist than have acne-free skin.
And so I started digging.
I started reading labels of all these products that promised me something that was always just out of reach and looked for the connection. Here's the quicker - it's quite easy to find!
All products meant to get rid of acne have the same 1 or 2 active ingredients. Now, that seems like a good thing, as those are approved by the FDA for treating acne.
You probably have something that didn't work again that you can look at right now or the next time you're at the pharmacy. Check the label and see what's the "Active Ingredient" listed.
You'll come to the same conclusion I did: all of these products contain either A) salicylic acid or B) benzoyl peroxide.
Now, the issue is not with these ingredients on their own. After all, they are proven to work on acne, right?
Absolutely - when there's enough of them in the formula and when the proportions are correct so that it doesn't just dry your skin but also heals it.
To put it short, most of these products are either:
a nuclear option that doesn't address skin health: kill all bacteria, hope your skin survives the onslaught of Sahara-levels of drought and heals without any help;
or an ineffective option with so little of the active ingredient added that you may as well ask your acne nicely to go away, as it's probably going to be just as useful.
And that's not even the worst bit!
Now, I'm not saying that these ingredients are bad - they can have some benefits.
The main thing they do well is getting rid of the bad bacteria that causes acne in many cases. But they're harsh and dry out your skin, meaning you're facing two glaring issues:
Dry skin that's prone to itching and flaking;
They don't discriminate between "bad" and "good" bacteria; killing the latter leaves your skin more susceptible to breakouts.
So, your best-case scenario is making your skin feel tight and sport white flakes; and your worst-case scenario is the very thing you've tried to work against - more acne. Surely, there's a better way?
The reasons people get acne are actually pretty simple. Here are the 3 main culprits:
Dead skin cells
Sebum (that's the oil your skin naturally produces)
You've probably heard of blocked pores a hundred times before, and that's essentially what happens - they're clogged up by either of these three things.
(Just to note - a little sebum isn't bad, but when you're constantly drying your skin out, you're forcing an excess production that will also clog your pores.)
When that happens, your pores become a cosy abode for bacteria. And, of course, bacteria can lead to inflammation and even an infection, manifesting as a cluster of zits and pimples.
Now, salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can and will kill these bacteria but do nothing for the other two offenders. That's why some of these products seem to initially work - getting rid of the bacteria is part of the equation. It's just not the entire thing!
And since they also dry your skin out, they make your skin produce way too much sebum - which is a vicious circle, as an excess of it causes even more acne.
To get long-lasting results, you need to address all 3 causes:
Get rid of the bacteria
Exfoliate dead skin cells
Control your sebum production
If you can get all of these right, you'll finally have clear, acne-free skin that will not be your main headache anymore.
After years and years of looking for the right products, I was close to giving up. Having clear skin seemed just out of reach, and the kind of skin all these clean girl routines tout seemed straight-up fiction.
And then one of my friends, who’s a bit of a fix-it-Ralph type, gave me a MATH Scientific acne kit for Christmas. I was a bit reluctant, especially since Jess always had far fewer issues with her skin than I had, but I wasn’t going to let brand-new products go to waste.
It ended up being the single best present that I’ve ever gotten.
A few weeks in, I saw my acne calm down significantly. On top of that, my skin was looking… nourished? I was waiting for the catch, thinking that the flaking I knew all too well was just around the corner, but it never came.
These days, breakouts are a thing of the past. If a lonely, singular pimple braves popping up, it goes away quickly, and without the significant mental anguish I was so used to. I’ve even had to switch my make-up to using just a touch of light foundation - I don’t need the industrial-duty levels of coverage anymore!
Me being me, I had to investigate why MATH Scientific did what no other product could do for me.
Well, it’s quite simple and goes back to the very things I’ve been talking about. These products make sure you don’t overproduce your natural sebum oils. They get rid of harmful bacteria and exfoliate the skin gently so it doesn’t act out. Plus, they’re moisturizing and nourishing!
My favorite part about this routine is that it’s just the three products that do the job - committed as I am to having glowy skin, I don’t quite have the time to do a 20-step routine twice a day.
It doesn’t just work for me - if you look at the reviews, there are literally thousands of women MATH Scientific did wonders for. I’m glad to report that it is, indeed, much more complicated to become a rocket scientist after all - and a good thing, too, as the only math I enjoy in my life is these products.
